Vendell A. Holmgren, 97, of Hallock, Minnesota passed away at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock early Wednesday morning, June 5, 2013. Vendell was born August 7, 1915 in Hazelton Township of Kittson County to Andrew and Anna (Swedberg) Holmgren. After graduating from high school, Vendell went on to attend Moorhead State Teachers where he received his teaching certificate. On December 3, 1938 he was united in marriage to Orpha M. Harper in the Lutheran parsonage at Hallock. Vendell taught in the Hill Township school for one year and in the Donaldson school for 14 years before becoming the Register of Deeds in Kittson County. He retired after 35 years of service. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church; and served as a Boy Scout leader for many years, helping seven members become Eagle Scouts. Vendell enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and was very active in the community. He is survived by his wife, Orpha, nieces and nephews. Vendell was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Kay Holmgren who passed away on May 7, 1976; a son, Larry who died on February 15, 2006; sisters, Mabel (Albin) Sjostrand, Anna (Carl) Vagle, Esther (Ed) Latin; and brothers, Oscar (Mabel), Sam (Orpha), Elmer (Mildred), Manford (Alice), John and Alfred. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, June 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Grace Lutheran Church at Hallock. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Rev. Frank Johnson, presiding, Renee Wahl, organist, Galen and Julie Nordin, duet. Casket bearers will be Charles Vagle, Lowell Vagle, Dennis Vagle, Wayne Holmgren, Glenn Sjostrand, Russell Phillips and Steve Holmgren.
