Obituary

Thomas James "Jim" Gustafson, 87, a lifelong Hallock, Minnesota resident passed away at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Jim was born in Granville Township on May 26, 1927. He was the youngest son of Oscar and Ida (McKibbon) Gustafson. He attended school in both the Grasshopper School and the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, Minnesota, graduating in 1945. Jim entered the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving in the South Pacific. After returning from military service he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. On December 27, 1949 Jim was united in marriage to Janyce Gullander. He farmed with the Gustafson brothers, then began to work at Gullander Hardware with his father-in-law, Oscar Gullander, purchasing the store in 1975. He retired in 1989 when his son, Tim purchased the business. Jim was an active member of the Hallock community, serving on the Hallock Fire Department and the Hallock Lions Club. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He is survived by his children, Jami (Barry) Underdahl, Elk River, MN, Joni (Paul) Sundberg, Atlanta, GA, Tim (Lori) Gustafson, Hallock and Bill (Barb) Gustafson, Billings, MT; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother, Allan Ray Gustafson, Hallock; three sisters-in-law, Maxine (Harris) Johnson, Hallock, Betty (Hank) Fischer, Detroit Lakes, MN and Lue Gustafson, Hallock; and 22 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janyce; parents, Oscar and Ida; three brothers, Linden, Lionel and Delbert; a sister, Frances Vaughn; and sisters-in-law, Faye Coleman, Sylvia, Dorothy and Harriet Gustafson. Memorial services are scheduled for Thursday, March 26th, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the memorial service. Rev. Frank Johnson, presiding; Renee Wahl, organist; Karen Vold and Jillayne Kraska, duet. Casket bearers will be Jim's grandchildren. A military flag presentation will be accorded by the Hallock American Legion.
