Robert Jewell Hendricks was born March 8, 1917 to Jewell and Theresa Hendricks. Robert passed away at the Good Samaritan Society in Warren, MN on Friday, April 6, 2015 at the age of 98 years. Robert was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The family moved to Stephen, Minnesota two years after Robert was born. He attended the country school in Donnelly township west of Stephen. After school Robert worked as a farm laborer. Robert was inducted into the US Army on March 24, 1941 at Fort Snelling in Minnesota. He trained in the western states until deployment to the Pacific Theater. He saw combat on the islands of Leyte of the Philippines and Okinawa of Japan. He was honorably discharged from the service at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin on October 18, 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster in recognition of his service. Robert was united in marriage to Inyce Benson, originally of Augsburg Township on December 6, 1943. After Robert's return from service to his country they made their home first in Stephen, then moved to the former Erhart Anderson farm northwest of Stephen in 1964. They raised three children. In addition to farming Robert drove school bus for the Stephen school district for 21 years. Robert was a member of First Lutheran Church of Stephen, MN. He was a life member of the American Legion Post of Stephen. He was an adult leader in 4-H. Robert also served his community as a board member of Sinnott Township for 33 years. He was on the board of directors of Stephen Farmers Coop Elevator. Robert enjoyed woodworking and many years hunting with his brother-in-law Curtis Benson. He and Inyce developed a passion for square dancing and traveled as far as Hawaii to share that love with other square dancers. Left to mourn his passing are his sons, R. Duane Hendricks (Claudette LeBlanc) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Brian (Jean) Hendricks of Stephen, Minnesota. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Christina, Joe, Melissa, Benjamin, Jonathan, Christopher, and Ethan; and eleven great grandchildren; sister, Margaret Hendricks of Newberg, Oregon; sister-in-law, Jackie Benson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years; his daughter, Marilyn George; and one grandchild, Daniel Hendricks. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, Stephen. Interment will be in the Stephen City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.
