Pearl McFarland, 91. of Drayton, North Dakota passed away at her home on Wednesday, June 6th, 2012, under the care of Grafton Altru Hospice. She was born on Sept 22, 1920, in Chamberlain, S.D., to Gilbert and Violet Landis, the youngest of three children. As a young child, Pearl was adopted by her step-father, the late Elmer L. Anderson, who moved his family to a farm west of Drayton, where she attended school. Pearl and Loren R. McFarland were married on May 4, 1938, at her parents' farm. They had two children: Dennis Robert in 1938, and Joyce Violet in 1944. Loren and Pearl lived in Seattle during World War II, where Loren worked at Boeing Aircraft. They moved to Drayton in 1944 and purchased land west of town. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on Sept. 8, 2011; her beloved son Dennis, on Sept. 5, 1996; her father, parents, a brother, Henry Landis, and a son-in-law, Roger Hilton, and Loren's parents and siblings. Pearl was an active member of the Drayton United Methodist Church and belonged to Sunnyside Homemakers, the Rosebank Rebekah Lodge in Drayton, Farmers Union, and was a 4-H leader. She became president of the Rebekah Assembly of N.D. in 1966, and travelled throughout the U.S. and Canada performing her duties. Pearl was a true partner in the McFarland farming operation. She drove combines, sugar-beet trucks and helped with haying for their cattle. She also raised lambs, pigs and geese early in her marriage. Pearl is survived by her daughter, Joyce V. McFarland, of Drayton and Arizona; and a daughter-in-law, Lorna McFarland, of Drayton. Other survivors are her seven grandchildren: Melanie McFarland, of Red Lake Falls, Minn.; Crystal (Todd) Beckman, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Nathanial (Angelique) Hilton, of Twin Valley, Minn.; Shaun (Lisa) McFarland, of Wilmar, Minn.; Janelle Pearl Violet Hilton, of Laguna Beach, Calif.; Mathew Joe Hilton and Karen, of Drayton, and Tyler (Christie) McFarland, of Grand Forks. Surviving great-grandchildren are: Ellie, Mollie, Cody, Montanna, Reilly and Asher Dennis. Great-step-grandchildren are: Tim, Cody, Trysta, Tiara and Robert. Pearl was known for her devotion to her faith and life and for being a gracious lady who enjoyed traveling, flowers, gardening, the sea, and especially dancing with the sweetheart of her life, husband Loren. The McFarlands travelled extensively. "Their 73 years of marriage were a continuous honeymoon to them," said daughter Joyce. "Pearl had an innate grace and style in everything she did. She was a precious wife, a wonderful mother and friend. She loved her family and grandchildren dearly." Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 16th, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Drayton United Methodist Church, Drayton. Interment will be in the Drayton City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Austin Funeral Chapel in Drayton on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
