Obituary

Merl D. Defoe peacefully passed away on Tuesday, January 20th, 2015 at Altru Hospital surrounded by his family. Merl was born November 5, 1936 to Oscar and Diana (L'Heareaux) Defoe in Neche, North Dakota, the 6th of nine children. He grew up and attended school in Neche. Merl moved to Drayton and worked at American Crystal Sugar Company until his retirement. During his retirement, Merl took over the care and maintenance of the Drayton Golf Course. He enjoyed spending his free time golfing and visiting with his second Canadian family and friends at the Drayton Campground. Merl also cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He was a longtime member of the Drayton Volunteer Fire Department. Merl is survived by his children, Allan (Brenda) Defoe, Grand Forks, ND and Margo (Bruce) Eliason, Lakeville, MN; grandchildren, Brody, Madalyn and Trevor; siblings, Rita Stark, Cavalier, ND, Eunice Weeks, Tennessee, Gloria Loeppky, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Johnny Defoe in Vermont; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Grant, Leon, Kenneth and Willard. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Austin Funeral Chapel at Drayton. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the memorial service.
