Mavis L. Petersen, 91 a longtime resident of Stephen, Minnesota passed away at the North Star Manor, Warren, MN, On August 29, 2023, with family by her side.
Mavis Lorraine Porter was born on February 23,1932 to Lloyd and Helen Porter, in Fairmont, MN. The oldest of four children, she was raised in the Karlstad, MN area. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church, Karlstad. She graduated from Karlstad High School in 1950. After high school she worked at several banks, the first one being at Karlstad, then Minneapolis, Denver, and lastly the Farmers State Bank in Stephen. She was united in marriage to James C. Petersen on October 23, 1954. They lived in Karlstad a short while and then settled in Stephen where they farmed and raised four children.
Mavis was a life long member of the Stephen Presbyterian Church, and served in the Ladies Aide organization. She was also active in the Stephen American Legion Auxiliary for many years.
She enjoyed golfing, baking, gardening and "shopping". Her "hole-in-one" at age "80" was a highlight of her golfing experience. She loved visiting with friends and neighbors over the years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and enjoyed having her family come to visit.
She is survived by three daughters, Janet (Brian) Spooner, Bismarck, ND; Jean (Morgan) Jackson, Gilbert, AZ; Jill O'Donnell, Seattle, WA; and one son Jon M. Petersen, Stephen, MN; 11 grandchildren: Angie (Levi) Olsen, Bismarck; Brent Spooner, Bismarck; Allison (Ryan) Jasper, Fargo; John Spooner, New Orleans, LA; Brady Spooner, Bismarck; Jared Spooner, Platteville, WI; Shannon Jackson, AZ; Tyson O'Donnell, Denver, CO; Shea (Junaid) O'Donnell, FL; Ashton O'Donnell, Denver, CO; and Lacey (Barik) Williams, Fridley. She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren: Bergen, Lucas, Marcus, Bennett, Alec, Braxton, Aspen, Gavin, Nora, Maddie, Henry, Aero, Oakley and Iversyn. Also surviving her are one sister, Ardys Lalonde, Ramsey, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim, two brothers Vern and Gary Porter, and a grand daughter Andrea Spooner.
The Family wishes to thank the many staff at North Star Manor and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Stephen. Interment will be in the Stephen City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at First Lutheran Church on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church of Stephen and the Stephen Ambulance Service.
