Mabel Ileen
Sundby
Jan 8, 1933 — Jan 28, 2021
Stephen
Mabel Ileen Sundby passed away on January 28, 2021 at Cherokee Rose Nursing Home in Glen Rose, TX.
Mabel was born on January 8, 1933 on the family farm in Parker Township, Marshall County Minnesota. She was a confirmed member of First Lutheran Church in Stephen, MN. Mabel lived her entire lifetime on the family farm. She attended Parker country school. She and sister Hazel shared in running the household and helping with all the necessities of jobs of a farming family household. Mabel loved the outdoors and spent many hours gardening. Driving into the farmyard people would be greeted by a huge red-hued bed of geraniums and baskets of begonias on the deck and hanging baskets on the garage. When the siblings built a new house in 1994, they built a large greenhouse onto the garage so the girls could have flowers all year long and start their garden seedlings. During the long winter months, Mabel spent time crocheting doilies and afghans and she and Hazel made quilts for everyone in the family. They also purchased a loom and made rag rugs. Mabel was a hard worker and had a servant's heart. She loved children and delighted in visits from her nieces and nephews. She so enjoyed creating new activities and finding projects to entertain her great nephews and niece; Kyle, Korey, Josh, and Kaitlyn. In February 2018, when it became apparent that they could not adequately care for themselves on the farm, Mabel moved with her brother John and sister Hazel to Tamarac Assisted Living in Stephen. In September 2019 she and her sister moved to Cherokee Rose Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Glen Rose, Texas so they could be near their brother LeRoy.
She was preceded in death by her father Hans Oscar and mother Melvina (Rood), her brothers Carl, John, Clarence, Roy and wife, Lyla, and sister, Hazel; sister, Mary Ann Gunderson and husband Orville and nephews Michael and Mitchell Gunderson. She is survived by brother LeRoy (Lee) and wife Sharon of Glen Rose, TX and nephews Kevin (Gail) Sundby of Stephen and Scott (Suzanne) Sundby of Cannon Falls and nieces Marchelle Gunderson Thompson (Larry) of Oak Creek, Arizona, Marlene Gunderson of Grafton, ND, Marla Gunderson Anderson (Brad) of Grand Forks, ND and Janelle Sundby Lacey (Kent) of Glen Rose, TX and their families.
Services will be held in First Lutheran Church on February 13th, 2021. Interment will be in the Stephen City Cemetery.
