Lillian Agnes Heigaard Ferguson, passed away at home, August 30, 2013 with her family at her side. She was born March 23, 1927 in Gardar, North Dakota to Oliver and Laufey (Eiriksson) Heigaard. Lillian grew up in the Garder area and graduated from Gardar School in 1945. She attended UND, completing 2 years of college by 1947. She graduated with a bachelor of science in education with a major in elementary education in 1964. Lillian received her masters in education with honors in 1970. She began her teaching career in Drayton in 1947. Lillian and Cameron Ferguson were married in Gardar on August 6, 1950. Cameron enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 and they lived in Witchata Falls, Texas and Valdosta, Georgia, returning to Drayton in 1955. Cameron passed away in 1973. Lillian resumed teaching in 1959 at Drayton Public School and taught many elementary grade levels until her retirement in 1989. She continued substitute teaching in Drayton for many years after her retirement. She was passionate about her teaching career and the success of her students. Lillian enjoyed reading, counted cross stitch, flower gardening, bird watching and watching high school sports. She and her family and friends spent many enjoyable summers at Lake of the Woods boating and fishing. In 2000, she and her sisters and brothers traveled to Iceland. Lillian shared her family's interest and pride in their Icelandic heritage. Lillian was devoted to her family and her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed. Lillian is survived by her children, Susan (Randy) Nilson, Arvada, CO, C.Kent (Nancy) Ferguson, Mohall, ND and Kris (Julie) Ferguson, Drayton; grandchildren, Ryan (Heather) Nilson, Littleton, CO, Tracey Nilson, Denver, CO, Kelsey (David) Rost, Bismarck, ND, J.J. Ferguson, Grand Forks, ND, Jordan Ferguson, Grand Forks, Collin Ferguson, Williston, ND and Kelton Ferguson, Mohall; great grandchildren, Hailey, Dylan and Logan Rost; brothers and sisters, Arthur (Mabel) Heigaard, Metter, GA, Mae (Leon) Rollin, Littleton, CO, Helen (Harlan) Bowles, Milton, ND Bill (Paula) Heigaard, Grand Forks and Jim (Kaye) Heigaard Enumclaw, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cameron; 2 infant sons; sisters, Jonina Heigaard, Ingeborg Johannesson; and brothers, Kris and Herbert Heigaard. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Drayton United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Drayton City Cemetery. Rev. Gary Johnson, presiding; Karen Schumacher and Shirley VanCamp, special music. Casket bearers will be Ryan Nilson, J.J. Ferguson, Jordan Ferguson, Collin Ferguson, Kelton Ferguson, Keith Johannesson, Steve Heigaard and James Bowles. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
