Leona Hemmes, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother,
passed away peacefully on June 30, 2017 at Kittson Memorial Healthcare
Center surrounded by family and compassionate care of nursing home
staff. Leona Cecelia Campeau was born in St. Vincent, Minnesota on
December 31, 1925 to Irene (Parenteau) and Frank Campeau. She married
Manuel Gooselaw on December 31, 1941. They had five children. Manuel
passed away on February 6, 1961. Leona married Wilbert Hemmes on
September 10, 1962. They had four children together. Wilbert was a
widower with five children from his first marriage. He passed away on
April 18, 1984. Aside from being a busy wife and mother, Leona worked
in retail, waitressed and was cook at Humboldt-St. Vincent Schools for
several years. She was a member at St. Anne's Catholic Church in St.
Vincent and later Humboldt Methodist Church. Leona moved to Coon
Rapids, Minnesota in 1986. She became a member of Epiphany Catholic
Church there and volunteered for many programs.
She is survived by her children; Philip "Jack" (Sandra) Gooselaw, Lake
Stevens, WA; Patrick Schneider, Blaine, MN; Marilyn (Karl) Sylling,
Spring Grove, MN; Reginald Hemmes, Las Vegas, NV; Brad (Susan) Hemmes,
Humboldt, MN; Deborah (Jake) Kopylov, Denver, CO; Marshal (Lorna)
Hemmes, Humboldt, MN; Denise Gruber, Clarksville, TN; Darlyce Hemmes,
Bellingham, WA; Todd Hemmes, Fridley, MN and Greg (Kim) Hemmes, Kennedy,
MN; 30 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; two sisters, Benita
Gregerson and Theresa Dismore; and a brother, John (Patricia) Campeau,
all of Blaine, MN.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; children, an
infant daughter, daughters, Eileen Hemmes and Judy Schneider; a son,
Francis; son-in-law, Douglas Gruber; daughter-in-law, Phyliss Gooselaw;
sisters, Marie, Evelyn, and Rita; brothers, Joe, Frank and Robert.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, July 7th at 11:00 a.m. in St.
Patrick's Catholic Church, Hallock. Interment will be in St. Vincent
Cemetery, St. Vincent, MN. Visitation will be held at the church for two
hours prior to the funeral service. Austin Funeral Chapel, Hallock.
