Obituary

Lawrence Orsund, 93, of Kennedy, Minnesota passed away at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock on Tuesday, June 18th, 2013. Lawrence G. Orsund was born at Hoople, North Dakota on May 19, 1920 the fourth oldest of eleven children, the son of Peder and Anna (Iverson) Orsund. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hoople. Lawrence attended District #22 school at Grafton and still shared memories of those days. He drove a two horse milk wagon (as a youth) delivering milk products in Grafton. Lawrence left for service in the Civilian Conservation Corps at the age of 15 and worked at Zion National Park in Utah building roads. He received $30.00 a month for room and board with $25.00 sent home to his family. He entered the U.S. Army in February of 1942, serving with the Signal Corps in Alaska. He was discharged in October of 1945. He returned home to Nash and worked for Monson and Daley in the Nash Store. Lawrence met Dorothy Peters in 1947 and they were married on October 17, 1948 at the Grafton Lutheran Church. They settled in Kennedy in 1951 where Lawrence found employment at the Keine Store. A son, Gregory Charles was born December 25, 1949 at Grafton. Greg died on August 12, 2004 of pancreatic cancer. Lawrence worked in the parts department at Massey Ferguson for several years before taking a job at American Crystal in Drayton. He retired in 1985. He had health problems most of his life but continued to work at seasonal jobs until age 85. Lawrence was an active community member. He joined the VFW Post #3828 , became Adjutant Commander and served as chaplin until his health began to fail. He had served as Kennedy Fire Chief and also served on the Maria Church Council. Lawrence had a gift for singing and sang at many weddings and funerals. He also served on the Kennedy Cemetery Board and the Sons of Norway. A two week trip to Norway in 1982 was a highlight in his life. He met cousins, enjoyed their hospitality, visits with Aunt Mari and enjoyed the beauty of the country. He visited the church of his father in Romfo and found burial sites for family members in the church cemetery. Lawrence is survived by his wife and love, Dorothy; siblings Arnold Orsund, Helen Schumacher, Margie Kennedy, Phyllis Eng, & Ellie Henderson, all of Grafton, ND, Wally Orsund, Aitkin, MN and Lucy Schatz, Jamestown, ND. He was preceded in death by a son, Greg; & siblings, Alvin Orsund, Gladys Hove and an infant sister. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, June 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Maria Lutheran Church at Kennedy. Kathy Levenhagen, presiding; Shirley VanCamp and Faye Potrament, special music. Casket bearers will be Cory Grochowski, Butch Fossell, Steve Blomquist, Curtis Forfang, Steve Nyberg, Dave Osowski and Roger Weinlaeder. Honorary casket bearers will be Shelly Loftsgurd, Luther Benson, and Loren Schultz. Military honors accorded by the Kennedy VFW Post #3828. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
