John was born on October 7th,1930, to George and Irene Money in Perham, MN. He was the youngest of three children. He grew up on a farm along Big Pine Lake near Perham, and when he was in high school, the family sold the farm and moved to town. He was active in sports, participating in football, baseball, and boxing. He graduated from Perham High School and enrolled in the teaching program at Moorhead State University. John played on the Dragon football team while at MSU and continued to do some boxing. While at college, he met Betty Holland, and they were married in 1952. Together they had seven children.
John was drafted into the U.S. Army and college was put on hold while he spent two years in the service. While there, he was an M.P. and also a
paratrooper. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to MSU to complete school. He earned his teaching degree, and in 1955, he and Betty moved to Hallock, MN, where he began his teaching and coaching career.
Over the next 31 years at Hallock High School, John was a teacher, coach, athletic director, and mentor to generations of students. He was a great storyteller, and this showed in his history, health and physical education classes. He coached almost every sport, either as the head coach or an assistant, including football, hockey, basketball, track, and baseball. He was the assistant coach on both of the only two Hallock hockey teams that have participated in the state tournament. He organized and coached the summer Legion baseball team for Hallock in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. John also was a driver's education teacher for over 40 years and taught generations of Hallock residents to drive.
John retired from teaching in 1987, but he continued teaching driver's education until 1997. In retirement, John and Betty enjoyed many years of traveling, visiting their children and family, and sightseeing at numerous parks, monuments, and historical sites around the country. Betty passed away in 2009. In 2018, John moved into the Nursing Home at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center and lived there the rest of his life. In his early days, during his professional career, and later in life, John loved interacting with people, and he left a lasting impact on his family, friends, numerous students, and all who knew him.
