During his teen years he moved from Minneapolis, MN to Chicago, IL. September 19, 1960 Jim married Kathleen Hemminger in Chicago, IL. Jim trained as an engraver in the printing industry and later opened his own jewelry and trophy printing business in Chicago's Loop. In 1979 he was chosen to engrave A.J. Foyt's name on the Indianapolis 500's winners, trophy. He also served 13 years in the Illinois National Guard and took classes at the Elgin, IL Community College. He enjoyed stargazing at the lake, playing cards with friends, fishing, and adopting pets. After Jim moved to Hallock, MN six years ago, he returned to engraving as his retirement hobby. As an online member of "Engravers, Café" Jim enjoyed exchanging ideas and techniques with professional hand engravers around the world. From his engraver friends: "We adored our friend Jim. He will be truly missed here at the Café." "I enjoyed seeing photos of Jim's work and reading his posts." "I really enjoyed Jim's enthusiasm, gentle sense of humor and the way he wasn't going to let his sickness get him down. He was a great guy." "Jim seemed to love what he was doing. I'm pleased that he kept on creating right up to the end." One fall, as a teen, Jim and three friends sang on Chicago street corners at the "Four Crosses".
