Howard Homstad, 94, of Hallock, Minnesota passed away on Monday, September 23, 2013 at the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center where he had made his home for the past year. Howard was born on the family farm in Hazelton Township of Kittson County, Minnesota on January 21, 1919 to Nels and Ida (Olson) Homstad. He grew up on the farm and attended country school for several years before transfering to the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, Minnesota. Howard served with the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. On April 3, 1948 he married Bernice Kohl at St. Paul, Minnesota. They settled on the family farm where they raised their family. Howard loved farming and being his own boss. After his retirement from farming they moved to Thief River Falls, Minnesota and lived there four years. Howard missed the rural life and his lifelong friends so they moved back to Hallock in 1995. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bernice; children, Beverly (Darrel) Lease, Littleton, CO, Carol (Harold) Kirmis, Billings, MT, Wayne (Wanda) Homstad, Hallock and Dean (Gracie) Homstad, Benjamin, TX; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Jeanette Rohe, Colorado Springs, CO; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Kjad; brothers, Ivan and Gordon; sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Charles Acker; and brother-in-law, Robert Rohe. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, September 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Lancaster Covenant Church. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Rev. Galen Nordin, presiding; Janelle Hostrup, organist and Galen and Julie Nordin, duet. Casket bearers will be grandchildren and great grandchildren; Visitation will be held on Thursday evening in the Austin Funeral Home at Hallock from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m.
