Herbert "Happy" Stegman, 89 of Drayton, ND passed away at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks on Friday, March 22nd, 2013. Herbert William Stegman was born seventh of eleven children on April 3, 1923 at Neche, ND the son of William and Beata (Gross) Stegman. He attended the Louden Country School near Bathgate, ND and entered the U.S. Army in 1948. On May 7, 1953 he married his lifetime sweetheart of 59 years, Carol Doten, at Solway, MN. The couple settled in Bathgate for several years before moving to Drayton. Herbert farmed in Bathgate area for 41 years, was a business owner of the Dairy Queen in Drayton and of car washes in Drayton and Grafton. He was also employed at American Crystal Sugar Company for 19 years. He was a member at Trinity Lutheran Church of Drayton, served on the church council and was Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion. Herb loved his family, enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, bird watching, flowers, hunting, fishing, and watching a good baseball game, especially "the Braves". In his younger years he played amateur baseball with his brothers, and golf and softball into his sixties. He loved to tease and had a great sense of humor. One of his favorite pastimes was working with his horses. He was very proud to participate in any and all events through the years at the Pembina County Fair, local horse shows, and parades driving his horse and buggies. Family members include his wife, Carol; children, Gloria (Charlie) Smallwood, Albia, IA, Wayne (Kerri) Stegman, Drayton, Susan (Rich) Pilon/Whitman, Burnsville, MN; grandchildren, Robert Zarn, Maressa, Kelli, and Cassie Smallwood, Trista and Kelsey Pilon, Taylor and Kasey Stegman; great-grandchildren, Carson Pilon and Emma Smallwood; sisters, Hildegard (Neil) Doten, Somers, MT, Frieda (Larry) O'Hara, Napavine, WA; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his five brothers, Fred, Daniel, Albert, Walter, Ernest and three sisters, Elizabeth, Gertrude, and Marie. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church at Drayton. Interment will be in the Drayton City Cemetery. Rev. Bernhard Seter, presiding; Sheila Weinlaeder and Linda Merrill, special music. Honorary casket bearers will be family and friends. Visitation will be at the Austin Funeral Home in Drayton on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.
