Obituary

Glen Evan Sustad, age 89 of Ada, Minnesota, and formerly of Stephen, Minnesota, died on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at the Benedictine Living Community, Ada, Minnesota. Born on July 7, 1926, in Viking Township, Marshall County, Minnesota, he was the son of Gustof and Ella (Loge) Sustad, He graduated from Newfolden High school in 1944. Glen began working for Stokke Brothers in Newfolden in 1946. In February, 1947, he married Ella Skretvedt in Viking, Minnesota. He continued working as a mechanic for Stokke Brothers on cars and trucks for over 2 years until the shop closed in 1949. Moving to Stephen, Minnesota in 1950, Glen began working for Joe Myhre - cars, trucks and farm equipment being his specialty. Fate would take a hand at this point as the Sustad family was making plans to move to California. Leo Halfmann, co-owner of Knitter & Halfmann, needed a good "Ford Man", and Glen agreed to take the job in the summer of 1952. During his years at Knitter & Halfmann, and later Halfmann Ford, he earned several awards from Ford for being a "Top Service Representative". Glen worked for Halfmann Ford until the shop was closed by Leo's son, Wayne Halfmann. Not one to be idle, Glen began his "Have Wrench, Will Travel" venture in partnership with Kevin Sundby at the Sundby farm location. Glen traveled to area farms repairing farm equipment, and working with air conditioning on farm trucks and tractors. One of Glen's favorite hobbies was traveling around the countryside surveying the crops, so it just made sense to take his work with him; even in semi-retirement. He also enjoyed deer hunting, playing cards with family, and (of course) working on farm equipment. On February 6, 2004, Glen retired from long years as a hardworking mechanic. Glen is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ella Sustad of Ada, MN; five children, Lyle (Karen) Sustad of Moorhead, MN; Keith (Jeanne) Sustad of Stephen, MN; Dean (Gale) Sustad of Centennial, CO; Merilee (Mark) Potucek of Ada, MN; and Arden (Carrie) Sustad of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter-in-law Barb Sustad of Eden Prairie, MN; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Warnes; brothers, Randolf and Clifford Sustad; son, Gary Sustad; and granddaughter, Katie Sustad. Funeral: 11:00AM, Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Our Saviors Free Lutheran Church, Argyle, MN. Visitation: From 3-6PM Friday at Mission Court Chapel of the Benedictine Living Community, in Ada.
