Florence Simone Matthew, 92, of Kennedy, Minnesota passed away at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock on Tuesday, June 25th, 2013. She was born Florence Simone Gauthier on November 23, 1920 in St. Jean Baptiste Manitoba. She grew up along the Red River with her many brothers and sisters. French was her first language, she learned English while she attended the convent school in St. Jean. Florence was very proud of her French Canadian genes! She met Scott Matthew of Humboldt, Minnesota while attending baseball games with her brothers. Scott was an avid baseball player around the region. They were united in marriage on June 30, 1940 and blessed with twelve children. She always said, "It wasn't cheaper by the dozen". Florence was an active volunteer in her church and community, always offering a helping hand. She enjoyed running, walking, cross country skiing, camping and gardening. Her grandchildren considered her the most fun Grandma "Ever". She will be sadly missed by her loving family: Jon, Westfield, WI, Ron, Bayfield, WI, Daryl (Viki), Fergus Falls, MN, George (Diana), Lancaster, MN, Jeannine (Jim) Blomdahl, Mora, MN, Mary (Bruce) Mortenson, Kennedy, MN, Don, Fergus Falls, MN, Phillip, Lake Bronson, MN and Mike (Elaine), Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Ryan, Chris, Dustin, Erin, Anna, Eric, Alana, Jared, Ashley, Jill, David, Krista, Drew, Kelly, Carey, Kirsten, Justin, Kylee and Walker; 23 great grandchildren; sisters, Corinne, Medicine Hat, Alberta and Lucille, Winnipeg, Manitoba; as well as nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Scott; sons, Daniel and David; a daughter, Elaine; a granddaughter, Heidi; parents, Arsene and Verina (Bellerive) Gauthier; sisters, Annette, Yvonne, Della, Louise; and brothers, Louis, Albert, Joseph, Joseph, Henri, Aime and Leo. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, July 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Hallock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
