Obituary

Don Nordling, 82, of Hallock, Minnesota passed away at Karlstad Senior Living in Karlstad, Minnesota on Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Donald Gordon Nordling was born June 30, 1932 at home in rural Hallock to Christopher and Ethel (Sjoberg) Nordling. He was raised in rural Hallock/Lancaster and attended Nylander Country School (District 16) in Thompson Township. Don graduated from Lancaster High School in 1950. Don was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. Don proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Upon discharge from the service Don returned to Kittson County and was employed by Pederson Lumber Co. He later worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in the maintenance department for 25 years, retiring in 1991. He spent many summer hours on the mower and winter hours driving the snowplow. For many years Don lived on the farm with his aunt, Irene Nordling, making it possible for her to remain in her country home. Don also helped his uncles, Oscar and Otto Sjoberg, on the family farm and in later years did field work for Steve Blomquist. In 2007 Don enjoyed a trip to Norway and Sweden with his sister, Gladys and niece, Jean. Don was a member of the American Legion and proudly presented the American Flag at programs and parades for many years. He volunteered many hours at both Union Liberty and Greenwood Cemeteries. Don and his "Blue Bomber" hauled loads of leaves during fall clean-up days. Don enjoyed country drives; checking out the crops and stopping to visit his friends and neighbors. He loved to play cards, such as nickels or go rummy with family and friends. He always looked forward to shaking dice with his Cenex buddies to see who was going to buy coffee each day. Uncle Donnie also had a secret duty that few knew about - he was the "Ho,HO,Ho" aka: Santa, for MANY youngsters over the years. Don is survived by his sister, Gladys Lang, sister-in-law, Elaine Nordling, nephew and nieces, Jim Lang, Mark Olson, Jean (Glenn) Johnson, Jodi (Rick) Sugden, Barb (Jim) Thompson, Becky (Pat) Logan and many great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Duane; brother-in-law, Douglas Lang; niece, Jeri Lang Olson and great-nephews, Corey Sugden and Kevin Logan. Services were held at 10:00 am, Monday, January 5, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church in Hallock. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 63. Arrangements were handled by Austin Funeral Home, Hallock, MN. Spring interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetary, Hallock.
