Clarice Viola Visness, 86, died March 1, 2015 in the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home, Hallock, MN. She was born July 1, 1928 to Paul Frank and Agnes Catherine Rhodegaard Magnusson. She was baptized on August 25, 1928, confirmed on October 26, 1941 with her brother, also a member of this class. Clarice Viola Magnusson was married to Stanley Leonard Melvin Visness on October 9, 1948 at the parsonage in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They met when Clarice worked at the Russell Westman farm as a cook and Stanley assisted them with their fieldwork. Clarice was baptized, confirmed, and married by Reverend G. P. Ronholm, pastor of Alma Lutheran Church, rural Argyle, MN. Clarice transferred from Alma Lutheran on December 25, 1951 to Skjeberg Lutheran Church, located near Drayton, ND across the river in Minnesota. Four children were born in this family: Stanley Leonard, Donna Mae, Pamela Jean, and Deborah Kay. Clarice started waitressing at a restaurant in Warren, MN when she was in her teenage years. When she was ready to go out on her own, she started working as a cook at the Westman farm. She also worked at Kennedy School as a cook, and spent many years at the Migrant School in Kennedy with various ages of children. She participated fully in farm life making lunches for the workers, driving truck, and numerous other chores related to farming. Clarice enjoyed gardening, canning, embroidery, and baking which helped her in her time as a 4-H leader. One might call themselves lucky to be a recipient of her hand written letters. She would also take time to visit others who were shut in or in the nursing home. Church had been important throughout her life. For many years she was very active in Ladies Aid at Skjeberg as well as teaching Sunday School. Clarice traveled to Norway; a treasured time spent with her sister Jean and extended family. She also used this time to look further into her roots, family, and Skjeberg's mother church. Family was important to her and loved time spent in gatherings. She enjoyed laughter and having fun. She would often tell jokes, and entertain. She was always up for a game of softball or kickball with anyone who would join in. One time she broke her toe and the doctor told her she should act more her age. Music was also important in her life as she taught herself to play guitar and sang with her brother at various community events in her early years. She even wrote and recorded a song during that time period. Clarice's grandparents were among the first settlers in Marshall County coming from Sweden in 1878 at the ages of 25. Their names were Frank Paul and Caroline Maim Magnusson. A story of their life was published in "Self Portrait of Marshall County" in 1975. Her grandparents on her mother's side came to Roseau County, from Hedalen, Valdres, Norway in 1888. Kari Bertilrud Rhodegaard was born in Norway on July 7, 1869, as Ellef Rhodegaard of Hallingdal, Norway. She is survived by son Stanley (Dorinda) Visness Jr., daughters Donna (Ron) Hjelmstad, Pamela Visness Anderson, Deborah Woinarowicz, 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, sisters Verna Hanson, Arlene Gehrls, Avis (Harold) Wagner, and a sister-in-law Lillian Mitz. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Stanley, sisters Donna Magnusson and Jean Potecek, brother Marville Magnusson, sister-in-law Ruth Magnusson, brother-in-laws Kermit Potecek, Vernon Gehrls, Earle Hanson, and a great-granddaughter Emma Verhoog. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, March 6th, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Skjeberg Lutheran Church, rural Drayton. Interment will be in Skjeberg Lutheran Cemetery.
