Obituary

Charles "Charlie" William Gallaway, Sr., 85, of Lancaster, MN, passed away on Saturday, August 16th, 2014 at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center. Charlie was born to John and Mattie Gallaway on September 25th, 1928 in Kittson County, Minnesota. He served in the military during the Korean war. Charlie worked for greenhouses around the Twin Cities including Hermes. He often brought home roses to his wife of 62 years, Verna Mae (Foster) Gallaway, during this time he also worked as a correctional officer at the Stillwater Prison until he retired at the age of 55. He and Verna married on January 31st, 1952. Charlie served as a member of the American Legion. He had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed planting flowers and trees. Charlie enjoyed snowmobiling and family outings in his younger days. He had a great fondness for mans best friend' including Angel, his most recent dog of 9 years. Charlie spent many days at the diner with his friends and enjoyed shaking dice with them. During his later years he really enjoyed the time with his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially when they visited the farm Paradise Acres'. Charlie and his wife, Verna moved from the Twin Cities back to his hometown in Lancaster, Minnesota in 2006 and enjoyed his retirement until he entered the nursing home in 2014 because of failing health. Charlie is survived by his wife, Verna, and their 6 children, Cindy Funke, Stillwater, MN, Chuck Gallaway, White Bear Lake, MN, Ken (Marcia) Gallaway, White Bear Lake, MN, Doug Gallaway, Prattville, AL, Sandy (Jeff) Peterson, North St. Paul, MN, and Sherri (John) Wright, West Linn, OR; 16 grandchildren & 9 great-grandchildren with 2 more expected. He was preceded in death by his father, John Gallaway; mother, Mattie Kjallgren; stepfather, Ed Kjallgren; sister Dorothy Frieberg; half brother, Harvey Kjallgren; 2 grandchildren: John Gallaway and Robbie Funke & 1 great-grandchild: Travin Nieman. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Lancaster Covenant Church. Interment will be in Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Rev. Galen Nordin, presiding; special music provided by the Popple Ridge Pickers. Casket bearers will be Samantha Wergin, Joshua Wergin, Kelly Gallaway, Nick Gallaway, Mike Gallaway, Bryan Derheim, Stacey Funke and Michelle Funke. Military honors accorded by the Lancaster American Legion Honor Guard.
