Charles Field, 91, of Stephen, MN, passed away on June 7, 2015. The funeral will be held Friday, June 12, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Stephen, MN, with Reverend Michael Schendel officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at the First Lutheran Church, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at the Stephen City Cemetery, Stephen, MN. Charles William Field was born May 30, 1924, to John Ward Field and Ethel W. (Lyons) Field in the hospital at Warren, MN. He graduated from Stephen High School in 1941. Charles farmed with his father until 1944 and then formed a farming partnership with his brother John known as Field Bros. until 1981 when the brothers split to form partnerships with their sons. Charles and son Jeffrey became C & J Farms, Inc. Charles married Leatrice Joy Larson September 15, 1946, in Stephen. They were blessed with three children, Candice in 1948, Rebecca in 1952, and Jeffrey in 1958. As a young man trying to provide for his family, Chuck removed snow in the winter for clients, worked at the potato warehouse, loaded coal to heat the local school, stocked lumber for the local lumberyard, and hauled wheat from Canada. His work ethics could be matched by few today. Charles was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Stephen where he served as elder, trustee clerk of session, usher, and anywhere else he was needed. When the Presbyterian Church dissolved, Chuck and Lea attended the Presbyterian Church in Argyle, and the Lutheran Church in Stephen. Anyone who knew Chuck could testify that his church and faith in God were extremely important in his life. He was a member of the Stephen Lion's Club and served as President. Charles also served as President of the Marshall County and Northern Polk Sugar Beet Grower's Association, he served on the board of the American Sugar Corporation Board for 6 years, the Drayton sugar factory district, as well as served on the Tamarac Township Board as treasurer for a number of years, and presided on the Farmer's Grain Elevator Board as Director. Charles farmed his whole life and the joke was often said that "The Fields were outstanding in their field." In 1996, Chuck and Lea celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss and their children hosted a big celebration in their honor. Chuck did find time for play as well as work and loved to golf, bowl, and learned bridge in the last decade of his life. There was a span of about 8 years when Chuck did not golf, as after he decided to grow sugar beets, he channeled all his efforts into their production before he realized that they would grow or not grow whether or not he golfed. He bowled for a number of years in Grand Forks and at the Cactus Lanes Bowling Alley in Warren, where he was a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame and served as President of the Association for quite some time. In 1979, he and his wife left the farmstead to son Jeffrey and moved into town. Around this time they decided to enjoy some warmer weather in the winter months due to the fact that he suffered from circulatory problems and began vacationing for 6 weeks, then three months, and finally 6-7 months out of the year. They rented for 15 years in Arizona before finally buying a Condo in 1999 where their friendships were multiplied by many, and they golfed and bridged to their heart's content. During the many months they resided in Arizona, Chuck and his wife affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of the Master in Mesa, and were regular members and active in all the church's outreach programs to help the less fortunate. During play time, Chuck even managed to hit 3 holes-in-one on various golf courses during his life. It is indeed a coincidence that in Minnesota Chuck resided in the "Red River Valley" and in Arizona he resided in the "East Valley" of Mesa. The biggest blessing of all was that Chuck could count on his son Jeff to carry on the farming business as he aged and his health deteriorated. Chuck's sense of humor, loyalty, honor, and integrity will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Leatrice of Stephen; daughters Candice (Allen) Oman of Bemidji, MN; Rebecca (Gregory) Milakovic of Belle Isle, Florida; and a son Jeffrey (Joy Edgar) of Stephen; and a sister-in-law Virginia Field, also of Stephen. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents Ward and Ethel Field, a sister and brother-in-law Hazel and Rod Welch, a niece Susan Welch, and his brother John and sister-in-law Betty Field, and his youngest brother Leonard Field.
