Carol Josephine Stegman, 79 of Drayton, ND passed away at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013. Carol was born fifth of six children on February 8, 1934 at Solway, MN the daughter of Roy and Alma (Pittsenburger) Doten. She graduated from Bemidji High School in 1952. On May 7, 1953 she married her husband of 59 years, Herbert "Happy" Stegman, at Solway, MN. The couple settled in Bathgate where they farmed for several years before moving to Drayton in 1964. After the move, they continued farming in Bathgate where Carol worked side by side with Happy for 41 years. She was the business owner and operator of the Dairy Queen in Drayton for 17 years and of car washes in Drayton and Grafton. She regularly worked the night shift at the Grafton State School and retired after 19 years as a Med-Tech. She was the sole caregiver to Happy over the last few years. Carol''s family was her world. She enjoyed family gatherings, her flowers, reading books and magazines, crossword puzzles, painting, crafts and watching jeopardy. She was a talented cook and baker. Some of her specialties were chocolate chip cookies, choke cherry jelly, homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, perogies and the animal pancakes she made for her grandchildren. She had a sweet tooth and liked everything sweet, especially ice cream! She had the kindest heart and always was willing to do anything for others. She put everyone else's needs first. She was a perfect example of what it means to bestow onto your children and grandchildren Unconditional Love"! The world was a better place with her in it! Family members include her children, Gloria (Charlie) Smallwood, Albia IA; Wayne (Kerri) Stegman, Drayton, ND; Susan Pilon, Burnsville, MN; grandchildren, Robert Zarn, Maressa, Kelli, and Cassie Smallwood, Trista and Kelsey Pilon, Taylor and Kasey Stegman; great grandchildren, Carson Pilon and Emma Smallwood; brothers, Lloyd (SvanHilda) Doten, 2 Palms, CA; Neil (Hildegard) Doten, Somers, MT; Lorraine Lewis, Bemidji, MN; Eleanor (Leland) Hall, Clearbrook, MN; MaryAnn (Roger) Lewis, Pinewood, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church at Drayton. Interment will be in the Drayton City Cemetery. Rev. Bernhard Seter, presiding; Special music, Sheila Weinlaeder and Linda Merrill, Nicole Holzinger, soloist. Casket bearers will be family and friends. Visitation will be held at the Austin Funeral Home in Drayton on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
