Bernice Homstad, 98, of Hallock, Minnesota passed away at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center on Thursday, January 22, 2015. Bernice Vilhelmina Kohl was born September 4, 1917 at St. Paul, Minnesota to Axel and Betty (Lindquist) Kohl. Bernice grew up in St. Paul and was a 1935 graduate of Central High School. She worked at Midway National Bank as a stenographer for several years. On April 3, 1948 she married Howard Homstad at St. Paul. They returned to Kittson County and settled on the Homstad farm. Bernice worked at Ben Franklin and the Coast to Coast store in Hallock. She had a lifelong love of the piano and played at funerals, weddings, church services and gave lessons for many years. Howard passed away on September 23, 2013. She has been a resident of Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center for the past nine years. Bernice was a longtime member of Lancaster Covenant Church. She is survived by her children, Beverly (Darrel) Lease, Littleton, CO, Carol (Harold) Kirmis, Billings, MT, Wayne (Wanda) Homstad, Hallock and Dean (Gracie) Homstad, Benjamin, TX; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; an infant sister; and brother, Arnold. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, January 26th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lancaster Covenant Church, Lancaster, Minnesota. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Rev. Galen Nordin, presiding; Janelle Hostrup, organist; Julie Nordin, Faye Potrament and Galen Nordin will provide special music. Casket bearers will be family members.
