Obituary

Beatrice “Bea” Adella Bahr, 104 years and 11 months old, passed away on October 1, 2026, after choosing to live a life filled with joy.

Bea was born October 20, 1921, in a log cabin built by her grandfather 3 miles south of Lancaster, MN, to Adolph and Freida (Nordling) Hoglin. She was the second of seven children (Andy, Bea, Ken, Olive, Verna, June, and Gerdis). School was first a nearby one-room school through 8th grade, then Lancaster high school. After graduation, she became a practical nurse but eventually headed to Seattle, where she worked as a mechanic at Boeing Aircraft during WW II. And if you got it wrong, she would quickly remind you: she was Bea the Mechanic, not Rosie the Riveter.

After the war, she returned home to help out on the family farm. One evening, her sister invited her to a dance in Halma where Bea met the love of her life, Earl Bahr. He earned the privilege of driving her home only after she flipped a coin to decide which of the interested fellows would get that honor.

Bea and Earl married in 1948 and made their home on a farm outside Humboldt, where they raised three children - Janice (Jerry) LePage, Vernon (Judy) Bahr, and Julie (Tim) Swan. Bea kept the household humming while Earl farmed with his brothers. After retiring, they moved to Hallock, where Bea delighted in the easy access to friends, activities, and daily visiting.

Sitting still never came naturally to Bea. Along with caring for her family and home, she was always ready to lend a hand to others. She shared her famous homemade buns, kept Surprise Cookies or bars on hand for anyone who dropped in for coffee, made quilt tops for church, supported the Station at every Bingo game, and sang in her church choir. She took part in Homemakers, Bible studies, 4-H, and more – always with energy to spare.

Her quirks were legendary. Stand still long enough, and she’d give you a back rub. Come into the kitchen as a grumpy teenager first thing in the morning and she’d greet you with a chorus of, “Here she comes, Miss America!” Give her three random words and she’d spin a bedtime story. Mention a new craft or new recipe and she’d try it.

Two of Bea’s greatest joys were family and singing – and they often went together. She remembered that she and her siblings never fought; they just sang. As adults, she cherished the yearly reunions with her siblings. The sisters always carved out time to slip away from kids and husbands to harmonize and sing the songs they all knew so well.

Bea taught us how to live with grace, welcome each day, accept each change, and keep joy close at hand.

Bea is survived by her three children, ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, and her brothers and sisters.

A funeral service for Bea will be held on Saturday, October 10 at 11:00 a.m. in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock. Arrangements by Austin Funeral Chapel, Hallock.

Memorials may be directed to Kittson Healthcare Auxiliary, PO Box 700, Hallock, MN 56728.
